Thracian gold fever

Article Abstract:

Archaeologist and showman, Georgi Kitov's fantastic discoveries have fueled national pride in Bulgaria that is wracked by economic problems and political corruption, but his methods have raised the ire of many in Bulgaria's scientific establishment. His controversial methods of unorthodox excavation parties, shady business deals and allegations of collaborations with looters, raises questions about how this former Eastern Bloc nation will manage the future of its past.

The gods return to Olympus: In today's Greece, worshipping Zeus is a controversial practice

Article Abstract:

Conventional ways of embracing Greece's rich past are considered insufficient by modern Greeks and thus Tryphon Olympios founded the 'Return of Helenes' movement in 1987, one of the several groups that made efforts to bring back the ancient ways. The Greek Orthodox Christian Church, which enjoyed political power and the main opponent of the Hellenes, feels that unlike most modern European democracies, church and state are not separate in Greece.
