Turkey's war on the illicit antiquities trade

Article Abstract:

Turkey has led the world in aggressive pursuing the return of its stolen archaeological legacy, an effort that is paying off in returned items and a reduction in the illegal trade. However, the theft continues, and as much as $100 million worth of coins, statues, friezes, and other antiquities are stolen from the country each year. Turkey's legal struggles to reclaim its heritage, successful and otherwise, are detailed.

Troubled waters

Article Abstract:

Rescue archaeology at the ancient Roman city of Zeugma, on Turkey's Euphratis River, is described. Threats of partial flooding caused by dam construction brought on these rescue efforts. Under Roman rule, the city was home base for the Roman legion responsible for deterring Parthian incursions. As the town prospered, residents decorated their villas with precious frescoes.

Dream to reality; finds from the legendary land of Troy

Article Abstract:

An exhibition of antiquities found at the site of the ancient Turkish city of Troy organized by the Archaologisches Landesmuseum Baden-Wurtemberg is described. More than 800 artifacts including ceramics, bronze weapons and gold and silver jewelry is included.
