An epic Western: from Wilmington, Delaware, to Wilmington, California - how an Easterner founded the port of Los Angeles
Article Abstract:
Young Phineas Banning traveled from Wilmington, DE, to Los Angeles, CA, in 1851, and became one of its earliest settlers. With his business savvy and experience as a shipping clerk and packer, Banning envisioned, and realized, a port and a deepwater harbor for the city. Today, Banning's former home has been turned into the 1864 General Phineas Banning Residence Museum.
