Breaking the news: let large initials do it

Article Abstract:

Large initials are still used in newspaper typography with practically the same purpose they served centuries ago even before the introduction of the movable type by Gutenberg. They are used to indicate the beginning of new text segments and to stop the monotony of long texts. The only difference is that the shape of modern initials are simpler. The two common kinds of initials being used in modern newspapers are the dropped and the raised.

Forward: to our roots?

Article Abstract:

The retro design concept in newspaper typography, which calls for the use of past styles in typography in an effort to return to the supposed glorious days of newspaper publishing, is flawed. This is because the styles and designs of the past were restricted by the then popular metal type method. The present newspaper design and typography are better because good typography directly correlates with technological developments.
