Client: U.S. Department of State's Agency for International Development

Article Abstract:

The US Dept of State's Agency for International Development in Islamabad, Pakistan chose Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM) to design the Northwest Frontier Province Agricultural Universitybecause of its vast experience and managerial expertise in handling large-scaleprojects. SOM faced some constraints such as slower processing of construction documents, higher communication costs and cultural differences with the Pakistanis. However, the Pakistani's excellent craft skills and the Americans' quality requirements work well for the project.

Article Abstract:

Banque Bruxelles Lambert commissioned Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM) for the extension of their office building inBrussells, Belgium because of its space planning expertise and efficient methodology. SOM encountered some cultural differences with the Belgians, such as their leisurely mealtimes, which influenced the design process but these were ironed out eventually. The cooperation from the local firms, proper scheduling and the client-architect relationship resulted in the successful conduct of the project.

Article Abstract:

Taisei Corp and the Hotel New Otani commissioned Kohn Pedersen Fox Interior Architects (KPFIA) for their New Otani Garden Court Club project. The Japanese believe that the combination of Americans creativity with Japanese organizational skills will result in a mutually beneficial partnership. The project was divided among the Japanese and Americans according to their skills and this hascontributed to the smooth flow of the collaboration.
