Lighting case study

Article Abstract:

Double glazed windows, light shelves and skylights are the main features of the architectural daylighting at the Sacramento Municipal Utility District's Customer Service Center in Sacramento, CA. Open-office workstations on the fourth floor receive natural light from skylights, while direct sunlight goes through windows and light shelves on all south-facing walls. Natural light also comes in through the large windows on the north-facing walls. Ambient lighting is provided by fluorescent luminaires, while adjustable compact fluorescent task lights are situated at individual desks.

Spec fees: unraveling our ethical fiber

Article Abstract:

Interior designers should stand up and fight against the increasing number of people engaged in accepting spec fees for specifying a product. Spec fees are additional compensation made to influence a designer's decision to specify certain products. Sometimes these fees are in the form of free lunch or baseball tickets given by a supplier to the designer without the client's knowledge. At other times, spec fees may take the form of a vacation, cash or a luxury car. No matter what form they take, spec fees sap the ethical standards of the industry.

IALD reflects ... how do you hold a spec?

Article Abstract:

A good lighting design can be successfully executed only if the design specifications are complete, accurate and detailed. Among lighting design practices which have proven effective in implementing designs are good communication with the client and the design firm, early development of product quality standards, a policy on substitutions and a discussion of the bidding process and procedures with designers. International Assn of Lighting Designers Helen Deimer, Larry French and Gary Steffy share their insights on lighting design specifications.
