No formulas, but lots of surprises

Article Abstract:

'La Gaceta' is a provincial Argentine newspaper known for its innovative use of graphics. Its transformation, from a stodgy black-and-white publication to one that splashes colorful and imaginative visuals on its pages, began in Sept 1994 when it initiated a redesign. This involved the establishment of an art department and the hiring of leading artists and designers. It also meant close collaboration between the art director and the newspaper's editors. To ensure visual consistency, the editors agreed to incorporate systemic elements in the design of each newspaper section.

A brand new look for America's oldest newspaper

Article Abstract:

The redesign of the venerable 'Hartford Courant' newspaper was overseen by art director Christian Potter Drury. Recognizing the need to create a fresher look for the 233-year-old newspaper, Drury opted to make subtle changes in certain areas such as the lettering of the nameplate while introducing bold graphic innovations elsewhere. The newspaper now uses the Minion style for headlines and Nimrod for body text. The redesign led, among other things, to a 6% reduction in text space, a classic front page look and a more up-to-date visual presentation of important features.

Doing it in style in London

Article Abstract:

The fashion pages of the 'Sunday Telegraph' are prepared over three days with photographs arriving on a Wednesday and layouts being proofed by Friday. In between, the photographs are scanned before being returned for montaging, blending and retouching. Photographs are then melded with text and graphic design before a final layout is finalized. The entire process is repeated each week, 52 weeks a year, with the art director working with the style editors to create the distinctive fashion pages of this British newspaper.
