Rheumatology

Article Abstract:

Researchers are beginning to develop drug therapies for joint diseases that are based on the underlying biological process. These include monoclonal antibodies to block T cells and inflammatory chemicals produced in the body. However, these drugs do not cause remission and their long-term safety has not been established. Efforts to find an infectious agent responsible for rheumatoid arthritis have been unsuccessful. It is more likely that some people have a genetic predisposition to react to certain environmental stimuli that would be harmless to most people.
