Blanchine's Bizet

Article Abstract:

The early ballets of George Balanchine remain part of his distinctive contributions to dance legacy. Many were performed to musical compositions by Georges Bizet, such as 'Le Palais de Cristal.' From its first through subsequent performances, Balanchine altered the ballet's choreography to showcase the talents of individual dancers and accomodate the size of the troupes.

"Because it is a masterpiece." (Theme and Variations)

Article Abstract:

George Balanchine's ballet 'Theme and Variations' conveys youthfulness and spontaneity while adhering to classical canon. The music is regal with a simply stated theme, with elegant and modest choreography. Although an initial performance was hurried together and was ultimately disappointing, the ballet remains a significant contribution to dance.
