Bridges and boundaries: African Americans and American Jews

Article Abstract:

The presentation by Pearl Lang and Bill T. Jones at the Jewish Museum, New York, NY, on May 21, 1992, addressed questions about the way ethnicity affects perceptions of and about a dancer. Lang, who is Jewish, and Jones, who is African-American, Jones believe that there is nothing unaffected by race or gender but Jones argues for a challenging of norms by reversing roles and for self-conscious attempts to transcend repressive structures. However, a critic should not let a performer's race or gender affect interpretation unless the ethnic identity is relevant to the performance. Dance reflects the society of its time.

Article Abstract:

The 17th symposium of the International Council for Traditional Music Study Group on Ethnochoreology held in Jul 1992 in Nafplion, Greece, focussed on the socio-political aspects of dance, the political positions of the researchers, the history behind constructs such as 'purity' and 'authenticity,' and costume and dance. Many papers at this seminar, hosted by the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation, were on the subject of the ethical aspects of research done from a specific political position.

Athena meets Venus: visions of women in social dance in the teens and early 1920s

Article Abstract:

A discussion is presented on the way in which dance and women's magazines of the early 20th century conceptualized the New Woman. Topics include the influence of Greek and Roman art, women's ambivalent attitudes at the time, and the way increasingly strong and independent images of women illustrated new possibilities for social, political and economic interaction.
