George Beiswanger and dance criticism

Article Abstract:

George Beiswanger made his greatest contribution as a dance critic in the area of American modern dance. He did much of his writing in the 1940s for the 'Theatre Arts Monthly' magazine. He documented the significant developments in American modern dance in the 1930s and wrote of dance as a theater art drawing inspiration from the culture of the artist's time as much as from the dancer's imagination. Beiswanger considered Martha Graham, Agnes de Mille and George Balanchine to be the key figures in the evolution of American modern dance.
