East/west: introducing Asian dance to the United States

Article Abstract:

The Asia Society always saw it as one of its aims to bring Asian dance to US audiences. Audiences complained at first that they did not understand what was going on so the society understood that it was necessary to introduce them to the culture whose dance they were about to experience and that such introduction could start with the atmosphere in the theater's foyer. A lecture-demonstration preceded the performance and food from the country in question was served during intermission. Eventually the society staged performances in 42 states and was able to create a receptive enough atmosphere that other institutions could invite dancers from Asia.

Dance and the Child International - "kindle the fire."

Article Abstract:

Dance and the Child International (daCi) is an association of dance teachers who believe that every child has a right to experience creating and performing dances. Its triennial conferences offer a glimpse of the latest developments in the world of child dancers. daCi has successfully promoted children's dance in all parts of the world through its publications and activities. Its conference held on Jul. 12-20, 1994 in Sydney, Australia, carried the theme 'Kindle the fire,' which speaks of developing a love for dance among children.

A chest of dance treasures in American libraries

Article Abstract:

Dance archives and libraries in the United States have made an attempt to preserve the artistic heritage of the country. The 1960s marked the rise of dance libraries and private collectors in New York and Chicago. The New York Public Library is one of the pioneering institutions that has succeeded in maintaining a range of collections in audio-visual aids and documents that provide information about American dance.
