Article Abstract:

Havelock Ellis' essay 'The Art of Dancing' was published in his book 'The Dance of Life' in 1923. The essay was typical of its time in its uncritical borrowing of comments on dance from previously written sources as was Ellis' assignment of equal value to the importance of dance in art, religion, entertainment and courtship . The essay is divided into five parts, including an analysis of why dance is significant, the importance of dance in world religions, the importance of dance in courtship, the arts and the ethical value of dance.

Article Abstract:

Detailing different critics' analyses of Doris Humphrey's Water Study can be a demonstration of different paradigms for understanding dance. Laban Movement Analysis studies changes in movement variables. Harmony arises from the affinities between the use of space and dynamics and from the connection of symmetry and equilibrium with asymmetry and disequilibrium, as shown in this dance's metaphorical rendition of the movement of waves. Dance can also be studied by way of its metaphorical implications or historical context.
