'The Hartford Catastrophe'

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the foundation of the American Ballet Theater of New York City in the early 1930s, by Russian choreographer George Balanchine. The original plans to establish a non-profit school for ballet in Hartford, Connecticut by A. Everett "Chick" Austin, Jr. and Lincoln Kirstein failed when Balanchine decide that the town was too small, profit and tution were desirable, and the local schools were hostile to the plans.
