The kanghelari dance as a means of communication in the village of Papadatai in Epeiros, Hellas

Article Abstract:

The traditional kanghelari dance in the village of Papadatai in Epeiros, Greece, has undergone changes over time. It is not clear whether the characteristics that distinguish and highlight the dance, the name of which signifies multiple turns and bends in a road in the Epeirotic language, came from improvisation on the part of a dance leader, later made part of the dance, or whether they had some social function or meaning. Research done was based on the hypothesis that the turns of the dance did not come out of coincidence, but served a purpose.

The functions of folk dances in Epeiros and their relation to contemporary social conditions in Hellas (Greece)

Article Abstract:

Dance is in Epeiros a key expression of the popular culture and soul. It is also one of the few methods available for communication and entertainment. The open circle dance, for instance, symbolizes that the villagers belong to a single community. A young girl's first appearance in the dance space means that she is ready for marriage. Celebrations such as weddings are the main opportunity for dancing.
