The sexual iconography of the Ballets Russes

Article Abstract:

Paintings, postcards, and photographs of the male dancers in the Ballet Russes emphasized their homosexual, erotic appeal. Dancers such as Serge Lifar, Vaslav Nijinsky, Leonide Massine, Anton Dolin, and Serge Diaghilev were often presented as representing a homoerotic nirvana where male beauty could be experienced as high art.

Igor Stravinsky and Ida Rubinstein

Article Abstract:

Igor Stravinsky created two works for Ida Rubinstein, he and she had a professional relationship that spanned twenty years. It began in 1917 with Antony and Cleopatra, a collaboration that failed to materialize and continued in 1928 with Le Baiser de la Fee, a major addition to the repertory of Stravinsky's music for dance.

A Ballets Russes celebration
