Risk, risk aversion, and on-farm soil depletion

Article Abstract:

A risk-averse farmers' soil depletion and associated production options are examined in two models. Feasible conditions are found in each model where a reduced level of productivity-induced soil depletion can be due to a reduced production level resulting from reduced land risk and/or an increased amount of initial farmer wealth. The models used comprise a three-date model, where only the second period is uncertain, and a two-date model involving uncertainty in end-of-period land price and output.
