Diesel power is another choice for the fuel-economy enthusiast where paying a seven-percent premium of $1240 for a diesel-powered VW TDI engines, one can expect 52-percent-better fuel economy relative to the base 2.0-liter gas engine. Diesels' success will depend on whether the hardware required to meet long-term compliance can be had for less than the cost of the electric motor, battery packs, and high voltage controller hardware that go into a hybrid with similar performance.
