Antiatherothrombotic properties of statins: implications for cardiovascular event reduction
Article Abstract:
Drugs called statins may lower the risk of heart attack and other coronary events by other means than just lowering blood cholesterol. Research has shown that statins such as lovastatin, simvastatin and pravastatin can reduce mortality from coronary events even without lowering blood cholesterol significantly. These drugs may have other beneficial effects, such as stabilizing plaque in the coronary arteries, which would keep it from rupturing. If the plaque does rupture, the drugs may inhibit excessive clot formation that might block the artery and cause a heart attack.
