Automakers are expressing a growing interest in gas-discharge lighting systems as they provide more illumination using less energy. The greatest hindrance to the widespread use of such systems is their high cost but many believe that increased production will soon bring prices down.

Automobile companies justify their entry in racing competitions as a means to try out new technologies. Aside from technology development, however, companies also capitalize on racing as a marketing tool while enjoying the fun side of such an event.
