The 24-hour Le Mans race is driven over a 13.6 kilometer track amid the streets of the French city where people can casually sit beside a cafe and watch cars drive by at speeds of 232 mph.

The Kaiparowits Plateau, north of Lake Powell, is the farthest from a town and a paved road of anyplace in the lower 48 states. Two walk-in and two drive-in adventures, most at speeds of 1 mph, are vividly described. The Land Rover Defender 90 handled every rugged backcountry challenge.
