Barter boom, tax gloom

Article Abstract:

Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is trying to stamp-out bartering, which is a tax-dodging ploy used by the barter exchange organizations, like Bartercard and Business Barter Exchange. An estimated 80 business barter exchanges are there in Australia, in addition to numerous local exchange trading service (LETS) systems.

The revised global money laundering standards, known as the Forty Recommendations, instigated the strengthening of Australia's anti-money laundering regulations. The response of CPA Australia to anti-money laundering law reform is presented. To flush out the bad money, the onus is on business or not is investigated.
