Taxing times

Article Abstract:

The number of tax cases in Australian courts has dropped since the late 1980s, when the Australian Administrative Appeals Tribunal and the Australian courts cleaned up the country's tax schemes. A possible explanation for this is that the Australian Tax Office is more concerned with implementing new tax legislation than it is in following up on compliance to existing legislation.

Tips on tax planning: looking towards 2000

Article Abstract:

Good tax planning should be implemented at the beginning, not the end, of the year. The wrong tax structure can be expensive for a taxpayer. The goods and services tax will be paid on most goods and services in Australia by Jul 1, 2000. Pension funds and estate planning must also be considered.
