The bottom-line impact of burnout

Article Abstract:

Employers who ignore symptoms of employee burnout risk lost time, employee theft, and reduced productivity. The financial services industry is estimated to lose over $282 million annually from internal theft, and these losses are growing at a rate of 20 to 40 percent a year. Employee burnout stems from a gradual process whose early manifestations may include a 'flat', bored feeling and may later show itself in deteriorated work habits and an increase in employee physical complaints. The employer should recognize that burnout is distinct from general life stress, but can ultimately spill over into personal life. One important tool for early detection of burnout is communication; giving employees an organized way to show frustrations and concerns. Regular feedback on performance and opportunities for advancement should be offered so that employee expectations are realistic.
