A comparison of spermatogenesis in homozygotes, simple Robertsonian heterozygotes and complex heterozygotes of the common shrew (Sorex araneus L.)

Article Abstract:

Complex heterozygotes of the common shrew (Sorex araneus L.) and simple Robertsonian heterozygotes and spermatogenesis in homozygotes are discussed on the basis of comparison. Karyotype effect on the level of germ-cell death was significant. Chain-forming complex heterozygotes underwent the most significant germ-cell loss. The estimated level of germ-cell death is likely not sufficient to influence the fertility of the males. The study was done in 56 shrews from two chromosomal hybrid zones in Poland.

Do riverine barriers, history of introgression shape the genetic structuring of a common shrew (Sorex araneus) population?

Article Abstract:

Genetic structuring of a common shrew (Sorex araneus) population is discussed relative to rivers, history, and introgression in the French Alps at an area where two chromosome races meet and hybridize. Rivers were not seen to have a significant effect on gene flow. A glacier and related geographical features are apparently related to the history of the hybrid zone. Phylogenetic analysis and partial Mantel tests were used for the study.

Preferential segregation of metacentric chromosomes in simple Robertsonian heterozygotes of Sorex araneus

Article Abstract:

The article confirms the role of meiotic drive in the preferential segregation of metacentric chromosomes in simple Robertsonian male heterozygotes of the common shrew (Sorex araneus L.).
