A landmark protein essential for establishing and perpetuating the polarity of a bacterial cell

Article Abstract:

A landmark protein, TipN is identified, which acts as a spatial and temporal cue for setting up the correct polarity in the bacterium Caulobacter crescentus. Ectopic localization of TipN along the lateral side of the cell creates new axes of polarity leading to cell branching and formation of competent cell poles.

The bacterial cytoskeleton: an intermediate filament-like function in cell shape

Article Abstract:

Research reveals that prokaryotes possess eukaryotic cytoskeleton protein intermediate filament equivalent, crescentin, which participates in the vibriod and helical shapes of Caulobacter crescentus. Data indicate that the absence of crescentin filaments the cells assume a straight-rod morphology.

Cytokinesis monitoring during development: Rapid pole-to-pole shuttling of a signaling protein by localized kinase and phosphatase in caulobacter

Article Abstract:

A control mechanism is provided by dynamic polar localization of a diffusible protein to monitor cytokinesis which regulates development. It is shown by genetic evidence that localization of the signaling protein DivK at the flagellated pole stops premature initiation of development.
