A new gene mapping resource: interspecies hybrids between Pere David's deer (Elaphurus davidianus) and red deer (Cervus elaphus)

Article Abstract:

Test for genetic linkage between five protein variants that are species-specific and 12 conserved DNA probes helps study the utility of interspecies hybrids between Pere David's deer and red deer for genetic mapping of conserved loci. Restriction fragments specific to Pere David's deer are identified by each DNA probe using sex restriction enzymes. Linkage analyses among the specific-specific variants help group the loci into four linkage groups. The LDHA and ALB groups yield identical segregation data on Southern and protein analysis.

QTL for live weight traits in Pere Dvid's x red deer interspecies hybrids

Article Abstract:

Interspecies hybrids between Pere David's deer and red deer are an important resource in seeking quantitative trait loci (QTL) in deer. Regions of the genome with important effects on live weight and growth rates were found, including putative QTL for 6-month live weight on linkage group 12. Linkage groups 20 and one seem to be linked to live weight traits between nine and 16 months.
