Acatos and Hutcheson

Article Abstract:

Acatos and Hutcheson reported a rise in operating profit for the half-year to Mar 1996, while disposals brought in 2.37 million pounds and the closure of plants led to a charge of 3.4 million pounds. The company sees this charge as the last which is linked to a restructuring plan. The company will concentrate production on two sites by 1997. Operating margins should improve following further closures and investment in plant. Pressure from raw material prices is easing.

Requiem of silence

Article Abstract:

A diary of observations kept from Jul 13 to Jul 23, 1992 records the devastating effects of the drought in Zimbabwe. Along with the rest of Southern Africa, Zimbabwe has received little rain since 1985. As many as 500,000 people in Zimbabwe are threatened with starvation as a consequence. Moreover, the drought has worsened social conflict between white landowners and landless blacks. The drought has killed thousands of hippos, elephants and other wildlife.
