Among- and within-population variation in outcrossing rate of a mixed-mating freshwater snail

Article Abstract:

A study assesses primary (after hatching) and secondary (after juvenile mortality) outcrossing rates of two mixed-mating snail populations in order to investigate the variation in mating-system parameters and estimate significance of inbreeding depression for secondary outcrossing rate. Results show that outcrossing rate is much more variable among families in the population with the lower average outcrossing rate, suggesting that individuals differ considerably in the mating system.

Article Abstract:

Increased genetic divergence and reduced genetic variation in populations of the snail Bembicium vittatum, a littorine gastropod, are discussed as they relate to isolated tidal ponds. It appears that there is a substantial increase in genetic divergence associated with the tidal ponds and that degree of isolation and population size, as opposed to localized selection, are major factors in allozyme divergence.

Genetics of sex-ratio variation inferred from parent-offspring regression and sib correlations in the apple snail Pomacea canaliculata

Article Abstract:

Regressions of the offspring sex ratio on the sex ratios of parents' siblings as well as correlation in the brood sex ratios between sisters or brothers are investigated, in order to infer the genetic system that produce the sex-ratio pattern. The results suggest the involvement of either a small number of sex-determining genes or sex-determining polygenes that act nonadditively.
