Biogenic magnetite formation through anaerobic biooxidation of Fe(II)

Article Abstract:

Researchers document that a bacterium called Dechlorosoma suillum can create magnetite under anaerobic conditions by reducing Fe(III) using nitrate as the electron acceptor. This could explain the presence of biogenic magnetite formation in Precambian rocks even though the Precambrian atmosphere was anoxic.

Anaerobic nitrate-dependent iron(II) bio-oxidation by a novel lithoautotrophic betaproteobacterium, strain 2002

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to verify the lithoautotrophic metabolism under nitrate-dependent iron(II)-oxidizing conditions. Results showed the abundance of nitrate-dependent iron(II) oxidizers in freshwater lake sediments, and also evidence was provided for the potential of microbially mediated iron(II) oxidation in anoxic environments.
