Analysis of the C. elegans Argonaute family reveals that distinct Argonautes act sequentially during RNAi

Article Abstract:

The Argonaute (AGO) protein RDE-1 has interacted with trigger-derived sense and antisense RNAs to initiate RNA interference (RNAi), while many other AGO proteins have interacted with amplified small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) to mediate downstream silencing. The results have indicated diverse roles for AGO proteins in Caenorhabditis elegans and have supported an AGO-relay mechanism involving structurally and functionally distinct AGOs that act sequentially during the initiation and effector steps of RNAi.

Knocking out the Argonautes

Article Abstract:

A comprehensive analysis of Argonautes in the worm Caenorhabditis elegans, knocking out all 27 worm Argonaute genes, is presented. The results have shown that all Argonautes have shared their ability to bind to small RNAs and RNA interference (RNAi) was able to induce heritable gene silencing in C. elegans.

Phylogenetic shadowing and computational identification of human microRNA genes

Article Abstract:

An estimated 122 microRNAs (miRNAs) in 10 primate species were sequenced to reveal the conservation characteristics of miRNA genes. The results suggest the presence of significantly higher numbers of miRNAs in the human genome than previously estimated.
