Bacillus subtilis spore coat

Article Abstract:

The nature and mechanism of spore coat formation among Bacillus subtilis strains may be analyzed through the use of a four-tier tentative model. The model suggests that the entire coat assembly process consists of four major steps governed by gene expression. The first step involves the binding of SpoIVA to the forespore surface, after which the precoat surface is formed. The resulting structure plays an integral part in cellular protection, particularly against naturally occurring chemicals such as the lysozyme.

Metabolic engineering in the -omics era: Elucidating and modulating regulatory networks

Article Abstract:

Some of the ' -omics' approaches that have expanded the understanding of regulation at the gene, protein and metabolite levels, followed by analysis of the impact of progress on the advancement of metabolic engineering are presented. An attempt is made to convey the ideology that combining global information from various levels of metabolic hierarchy is absolutely essential in understanding and predicting the relationship between changes in gene expression and the resulting phenotype.

Compartmentalization of gene expression during bacillus subtilis spore formation

Article Abstract:

Formation of spores by bacillus subtilis is a primitive system of cell differentiation, which has become a paradigm for the study of cell differentiation in prokaryotes. The genetic and biochemical experiments that have led to the discovery and characterization of cell-specific programs of gene expression are discussed.
