Breeding virus resistant potatoes (Solanum tuberosum): a review of traditional and molecular approaches

Article Abstract:

A review of traditional and molecular approaches in breeding virus-resistant potatoes, Solanum tuberosum, is presented. Sources of available resistance, marker-assisted selection, conventional breeding methods, somaclonal variation, pathogen-derived and other transgenic resistance and transformation with cloned host genes. The relative merits of the different methods are discussed, and the likely direction of future developments is considered.

The quantitative genetics of sex allocation in the andromonoecious perennial, Solanum carolinense (L.)

Article Abstract:

The quantitative genetics of sex allocation in the andromonoecious perennial, Solanum carolinense (L.), are researched to find heritabilities and genetic and environmental correlations for flower number, the fraction of the flowers that turned out male, and size of flower parts in each of three populations used in a diallel crossing study. In this species flower size and number have potential to affect sex-specific reproductive success.

A review of host major-gene resistance to potato viruses X, Y, A and V in potato: genes, genetics and mapped locations

Article Abstract:

Host major-gene resistance to potato viruses X, Y, A and V in potato is discussed relative to genetics, genes, and mapped locations. Inheritance studies, including linkage studies and molecular mapping and position of resistance genes so far mapped are listed. Information is relevant for potato breeding, for genetic and mapping studies, and for gene cloning.
