Bridging the gulf

Article Abstract:

Invitrogen hired 1,000 life sciences PhDs worldwide, of which around 30% were fresh graduates and is expected to hire another 1,000 by the year-end of 2006. Since the new hires could not contribute significantly to the company, Invitrogen is offering management training and other business-oriented courses to train young scientists in the business of biotech industry so as to produce a long-term steady supply of biotech-ready scientists.

The most successful networkers create a long-term plan for themselves, make target list of the people and companies they are targeting and constantly keep in touch with them through e-mail. The strategy is to make a position for themselves, while letting others know of what you do best and also knowing when to approach people and how to go about it.

Industry postdocs make the grade

Article Abstract:

Genentech has become the first company to make it into the top 15 Best Places to Work as a postdoc. The National Science foundation has revealed that nationwide about 9% postdocs are in industry position, while 80% are in academia and 11% are in government positions.
