Cometabolic degradation of chlorinated alkenes by alkene monooxygenase in a propylene-grown Xanthobacter strain

Article Abstract:

The alkene-oxidizing bacterium Xanthobacter strain Py2 was tested for its ability to utilize eight types of chlorinated alkenenes. The result showed that strain Py2 could oxidize several C2 and C3 chlorinated alkenes through the actions of alkene monooxygenase. The degradation of chlorinated alkenes could be enhanced by propylene oxide, propionaldehyde and glucose. However, several products of chlorinated alkene oxidation exhibited toxic properties.

Aliphatic and chlorinated alkenes and epoxides as inducers of alkene monooxygenase and epoxidase activities in Xanthobacter strain Py2

Article Abstract:

Many aliphatic and chlorinated alkenes and epoxides stimulate the alkene monooxygenase and epoxidase system in the Xanthobacter strain Py2. The enzymes are modulated at the level of gene expression. The induction of the system appears to be specific for substances which are similar to its natural substrates, propylene and propylene oxide. Glucose, which serves as an alternate carbon source, has no effect on the induction of the enzymes.

Regulation of the synthesis and activity of ammonia monooxygenase in Nitrosomonas europaea by altering pH to affect NH3 availability

Article Abstract:

The regulation of ammonia monooxygenase enzyme activity of Nitrosomonas europaea was investigated by altering the availability of ammonia through pH manipulation. The metabolism of N. europaea is strongly influenced by the ammonium levels in the medium as revealed by the ammonium dependent oxygen uptake activity. This activity is strongly regulated in Nitrosomonas as a response to the ammonia concentration in the medium.
