Conjugative plasmid transfer between bacteria under simulated marine oligotrophic conditions

Article Abstract:

The genetic and transport functioning of plasmids under starving enteric and marine strains is discussed. Pure cultures of efficient plasmid donors and recipients, a self-transmissible plasmid with a broad host range, an artificial seawater with no carbon substrate and a defined substratum were used in the study. The ecological significance of plasmid transfer under oligotroph conditions to gene transfer in natural marine environments was established.

Use of a promoterless lacZ gene insertion to investigate chitinase gene expression in the marine bacterium Pseudoalteromonas sp. strain S9

Article Abstract:

An S9 chitinase-negative mutant having the promoterless gene lacZ reporter gene was synthesized by inserting the transposon mini-Tn10:lac:kan in Pseudomonas sp. strain S9 bacterium. The mutant gene was then used in studying the expression of a chitinase gene promoter. Analysis of the 16S rRNA sequence of the marine bacteria Pseudomonas sp. strain S9 shows that is very similar to the Pseudoalteromonas spp. as proposed by Gauthier et al.

Plasmid transfer between narine bacteria in the aqueous phase and biofilms in reactor microcosms

Article Abstract:

The detection of marine bacteria plasmid transfer without selection microcosm is discussed. Plasmid transfer was characterizd by selection and optimization of a mating pair and reactor experiments. Pooled variance estimates were used to calculate cellular mean plasmid transfer frequencies. The sufficient presence of cell-cell interaction for the occurrence of plasmid transfer in the plasmid-bearing bacterial strain was demonstrated.
