Exploitation of plasmid pMRC01 to direct transfer of mobilizable plasmids into commercial lactococcal starter strains

Article Abstract:

Researchers have discovered a genetic sequence on the lactococcal plasmid pMRC01 that resembles an origin of transfer (oriT). This oriT could be used to in a vector to genetically modify lactococcal starter strains used in the food industry.

Production of enterolysin A by a raw milk enterococcal isolate exhibiting multiple virulence factors

Article Abstract:

Research reveals that the DPC5280 strain of Enterococcus faecalis, isolated from Irish raw milk, displays antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria. Data indicate that the inhibition is due to a cytolysin and an antimicrobial protein. The protein exhibits cell-wall-degrading activity and is similar to the cell-wall degrading enzyme, enterolysin A.

Controlled autolysis and enzyme release in a recombinant lactococcal strain expressing the metalloendopeptidase enterolysin A

Article Abstract:

The possibility of exploiting lytic enzyme enterolysin A(EntL) in applications involving lactococcal starter cultures is investigated. A recombinant lactococcal strain is generated which expresses EntL under the control of the nisin-inducible promoter and consequently allows nisin-induced autolysis.
