Decoding the rice genome

Article Abstract:

The path of rice genome sequencing from its initiation to the current status is traced and the information obtained from the genome of the first food crop to be sequenced is interpreted. The sequence provides the required ingredients for functional genomics and molecular breeding programs aimed at unraveling intricate cellular processes and improving rice productivity.

From the margins of the genome: Mobile elements shape primate evolution

Article Abstract:

The advances in the understanding of the host-mobile element dynamic and its overall impact on primate evolution are reviewed. Primate genomes are inundated with repetitive sequence that consists of 'molecular fossils' inherited from early mammalian ancestors and a significant portion of this material comprises active mobile element lineages.

Photosynthetic evolution in parasitic plants: insight from the chloroplast genome

Article Abstract:

The emerging patterns in reported gene loss and gene retention in the chloroplast genomes of parasitic plants are highlighted. The review relates gene retention to current knowledge of protein function and gene processing that has implications to broader aspects of genome conservation in organelles.
