Developmental utilization of SpP3A1 and SpP3A2: two proteins which recognize the same DNA target site in several sea urchin gene regulatory regions

Article Abstract:

The DNA-binding proteins, SpP3A1 and SpP3A2 are maternal factors which interact with the same sites on the CyIIIa gene. The mRNA coding for them is present in the unfertilized eggs and these proteins are present in the nuclei since the early stages of development but as development progresses SpP3A1 concentration decreases rapidly till at the early gastrula stage only SpP3A2 is present in functional quantities. The interactions of these proteins with the CyIIIa gene is necessary for the inhibition of ectopic oral ectoderm expression.
