Discovery of a new source of rifamycin antibiotics in marine sponge actinobacteria by phylogenetic prediction

Article Abstract:

Phylogenetic analysis of the ketosynthase (KS) gene sequences of marine sponge-derived Salinispora strains of actinobacteria was carried out to indicate that the polyketide synthase (PKS) gene sequence most closely related to that of Salinispora was the rifamycin B synthase of Amycolatopsis mediterranei. The discovery of rifamycin synthesis by Salinispora strains implies that they are a potential new source, outside the genus Amycolatopsis, of rifamycins and of polyketide synthesis gene clusters specific to rifamycin synthesis.

Diversity of green-like and red-like ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase large-subunit genes (cbbL) in differently managed agricultural soils

Article Abstract:

The diversity and composition of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase large-subunit genes (cbbL) in soil bacteria isolated from differently managed agricultural soils from a long term, so-called eternal rye experiment in Halle/Saale, Germany was studied. The analyses revealed that bacterial genera such as Bacillus, Streptomyces, and Arthrobacter harbor red-like cbbL genes, which fall into the cbbL gene clusters retrieved from the investigated soils.

Genetic diversity of nifH gene sequences in Paenibacillus azotofixans strains and soil samples analyzed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis of PCR-amplified gene fragments

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the diversity of dinitrogenase reductase gene (nifH) fragments in Paenibacillus azotofixans strains using molecular techniques. PCR amplification using degenerate primers was used on the partial nifH gene sequences of eight P. azotofixans strains and one strain each of its close relatives. Results indicate sequence heterogeneity among various nifH genes which suggests that the strains are closely affiliated.
