Dissecting the cost of insecticide resistance genes during the overwintering period of the mosquito Culex pipiens

Article Abstract:

The cost of organophosphate resistance genes during the overwintering period has been studied in the mosquito Culex pipiens. Results are discussed relative to the local evolution of such genes in southern France. A lower overall frequency to resistant phenotypes was found in the second part of the winter at one locus suggesting that a large fitness cost had been exacted. A decreasing frequency or resistant phenotypes was found at another locus, showing a large survival cost of resistant mosquitoes in the former overwintering site.

Population structure and dynamics of insecticide resistance genes in Culex pepiens populations from Italy

Article Abstract:

Distribution of resistance genes as related to gene flow and genetic structure from one field population of Culex pipiens, mosquitoes, from Italy to another has been studied. Genetic differentiation from sample to sample was low. Strong differentiation in distribution of resistance genes was found, as was high correlation with the presence or absence of organophosphate insecticide traces. Fitness cost and pattern of dispersal were considered.

Quantitative variation and selection of esterase gene amplification in Culex pipiens

Article Abstract:

Quantitative selection and variation of esterase gene amplification in Culex pipiens, a mosquito, as found in four laboratory strains originated from California populations and three natural populations from France is discussed as related to evolution of insecticide resistance. Analysis results show esterase activity, amplification, and resistance covary and amplification level evolution can occur under selection.
