Ecological aspects of ntcA gene expression and its use as an indicator of the nitrogen status of marine Synechococcus spp

Article Abstract:

Expression of the ntcA gene by the marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus can be used to measure the nitrogen deprivation of marine water samples. This gene produces NtcA, which regulates nitrogen nutrition in this bacterium. Ammonia suppresses ntcA expression, and maximal expression occurs during nitrogen deprivation.

A Synechococcus PglnA::luxAB fusion for estimation of nitrogen bioavailability to freshwater cyanobacteria

Article Abstract:

Research describes the design and construction of a fusion protein fusing the glutamine synthetase-encoding gene, P glnA from Synechococcus sp. strain PCC7942 to the luxAB luciferase-encoding genes from Vibrio harveyi and introduced into a chromosomal site in Synechococcus. The fusion protein containing bacteria emit light depending on the ambient inorganic and bioavailable nitrogen concentrations.

Photosynthesis of Prochlorothrix hollandica under sulfide-rich anoxic conditions

Article Abstract:

Microbiological research shows that the cyanobacteria Prochlorothrix hollandica continues to photosynthesize in an anoxic, sulfide-rich environment. Anoxygenic photosynthesis activity, albeit at lower levels, continues when the photosystem II inhibitor DCMU [N-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-N'-dimethylurea] is added to the system. The organism contains a hydrophobic manganese-stabilizing protein which is thought to offer it photosystem II protection from sulfide.
