Effect of elevated tropospheric ozone on the structure of bacterial communities inhabiting the rhizosphere of herbaceous plants native to Germany

Article Abstract:

The effect of ozone on the structural diversity of bacteria inhabiting the rhizosphere is investigated and herbaceous plants native to Germany are grown in the same soil and exposed in open-top chambers (OTCs) to ozone concentrations that may occur on sunny summer days to elucidate the effect of below-ground processes in natural ecosystems. The results have shown a very small effect on the structural diversity of the bacterial community in rhizospheres.

Spatial heterogeneity of crenarchaeal assemblages within mesophilic soil ecosystems as revealed by PCR-single-stranded conformation polymorphism profiling

Article Abstract:

A study to analyze the spatial distribution of crenarchaeal assemblages in soil is presented. PCR-single-stranded conformation polymorphism(PCR-SSCP) is used to identify crenarchaeal phylotypes and to quantify their relative abundance in replicated soil samples collected at six locations in southern and central Wisconsin.

Comparison of crenarchaeal consortia inhabiting the rhizosphere of diverse terrestrial plants with those in bulk soil in native environments

Article Abstract:

An examination of whether the crenarchaeal consortium found in rhizosphere is distinct from the assemblage of crenarchaeotes inhabiting bulk soil is made. Divergent terrestrial plant groups including bryophytes, lycopods, pteridophytes, gymnosperms, and angiosperms were collected for this study.
