Effect of sodium chloride on the intracellular solute pools of Listeria monocytogenes

Article Abstract:

The accumulation of intracellular solutes by Listeriamonocytogenes during increased salinity and osmotic stress is discussed. This involved experiments wherein cells grown at various concentrations of sodium chloride were measured of their volume and their intracellular osmotic potential were estimated. It was found that the ability of the bacterium to grow in both salt concentrations and in other bacteria is derived from the organism's accumulation of intracellular solutes.

Determination of virulence of different strains of Listeria monocytogenes and Listeria innocua by oral innoculation of pregnant mice

Article Abstract:

A method of utilizing invasiveness and infection of placental and fetal tissues as the criteria for virulence to differentiate between strains of Listeria monocytogenes is evaluated. This involves the peroral inoculation of pregnant mice. Microbiological and histologic methods were used to sample and analyze the tissues. The model was found to be a relevant assay for the evaluation of virulence of a food-borne pathogen.
