Effect of wing scalloping mutations on cut expression and sense organ differentiation in the Drosophila wing margin

Article Abstract:

The cut wing mutations of the cut locus in Drosophila result in undifferentiated wing margin mechanoreceptors and noninnervated bristles. Phenotypic interactions of Notch, Serrate and Scallopedwith weak cut mutations were studied. Results showed that mutations in these genes act synergistically with cut mutations. Further characterization showed that these mutations block cut expression by inactivating the enhancer for cut transcription. The genes affected by these mutations are involved in neural development.

Structure and regulation of a complex locus: the cut gene of Drosophila

Article Abstract:

A homeobox protein which is localized in the nuclei of various types of tissues is encoded by the cut locus in Drosophila melanogaster. The presence of a cut protein is essential for the functioning of the external sensory organs, since the absence of the protein results in the conversion of the sensory organs to chordotonal organs. The 'cut' is also expressed in Malpighian tubules, central nervous system, spiracles and several other tissues.

Tumorous-head (tuh-1; tuh3) modulates Abd-B bithorax-complex functions in Drosophila melanogaster

Article Abstract:

The interaction of abdominal-B (Abd-B) mutations in the bithorax-complex with tumurous-head (tuh-3) of Drosophila melanogaster were studied. The interactions of Abd-B mutations and tuh-3 with the maternal effect locus (tuh-1) and the homeotic mutant controlling tuh-3 expression were also analyzed. Results showed that tuh-1 and tuh-3 modulates Abd-B bithroax complex functions.
