Effects of condensed tannins on endoglucanase activity and filter paper digestion by Fibrobacter succinogenes S85

Article Abstract:

The effects of condensed tannins on the digestion of cellulose by the rumen bacteria Fibrobacter succinogenes S85 were determined. The results showed that condensed tannins induced a transient increase in the activity of cell-associated endoglucanases, accompanied by a decrease in the activity of extracellular endoglucanases. Howver, as the concentration of condensed tannins approached 400 micrograms per milliliter, all endoglucanases were inhibited. These results confirm earlier reports on the inhibitory effects of condensed tannins on cellulose digestion.

Reduction of selenate and selenite to elemental selenium by a Pseudomonas stutzeri isolate

Article Abstract:

Selenite and selenate ions were rapidly reduced to elemental selenium at initial concentrations of both anions of up to 48.1 mM. by a Pseudomonas stutzeri isolate. Aerobic conditions were used for optimal selnuium reduction. It was found that sulfite, chromate and tungstate ions were the only anions which affected the reduction of both concentrates by inhibiting their growth and reduction.

A novel family 9 endoglucanase gene(celD), whose product cleaves substrates mainly to glucose, and its adjacent upstream homolog (celE) from Fibrobacter succinogenes S85

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the nucleotide sequence of the DNA insert from the endoglucanase clone pCel12 (25). The two adjacent genes celE and celD were found in the insert DNA of the clone pCel12 (25) and were separated by a short intergenic region. The two genes were 73% homologous in their DNA sequences and the encoded endoglucanases EGE and EGD were 70% identical in primary structure.
