Escherichia coli resistance to chlorine and glutathione synthesis in response to oxygenation and starvation

Article Abstract:

The response of two isogenic Escherichia coli strains to oxygenation and starvation relative to resistance to chlorine and glutathione (GSH) synthesis has been studied. The E. coli mutant lacking in GSH was not more sensitive to the oxidant than the parent strain when the bacteria were cultured with low oxygen. Both starvation and oxygenation improved the resistance of the parent strain to chlorine. The resistance of the deficient strain was not changed.

Degradation of 1,4-dioxane and cyclic esters by an isolated fungus

Article Abstract:

A 1,4-dioxane-degrading microorganism was isolated from the soil by using 1,4-dioxane as the sole source of carbon and the substrate specificity of the fungus for cyclic ethers and the degradation products of 1,4-dioxane are described. A degradation pathway involving ethylene glycol, glycolic acid and oxalic acid was proposed, followed by incorporation of the glycolic acid and/or oxalic acid through glyoxylic acid into the tricarboxylic acid cycle.
