Essential role of the inositol 1, 4, 5-trisphosphate receptor/Ca2+ release channel in Ca2+ waves and Ca2+ oscillations at fertilization of mammalian eggs

Article Abstract:

Researchers used a function-blocking monoclonal antibody to the inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (InsP3) receptor/Ca2+ release channel, to offer proof that InsP3-stimulated Ca2+ release (11CR) from intracellular stores acts at fertilization of the hamster egg, and that 11CR is necessary in the activation, spread and oscillation of the sperm-induced Ca2+ increases. At fertilization, mammalian eggs reveal repetitive increases in the cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration (Ca2+ oscillations) related to the spread of Ca2+ waves in the early reactions.

The inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate receptor expression in Drosophila suggests a role for IP3 signalling in muscle development and adult chemosensory functions

Article Abstract:

The mechanism of inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate (IP3) signaling is vital during pupal muscle development, in adult muscle and brain activities, and in adult taste, visual and olfactory transduction in fruit flies. Researchers identified the pattern of IP3 receptors in the body using an affinity purified antibody. The IP3 receptor is an important component of the IP3 signaling mechanism used during muscle development when myoblasts rapidly proliferate, and is likely a secondary messenger in chemosensory functions.
