Evaluation of fluorescently labeled lectins for noninvasive localization of extracellular polymeric substances in Sphingomonas biofilms

Article Abstract:

Lectins may not be suitable for studying extracellular polymeric substances in biofilms. In a study of five fluorescently labeled lectins, only two bound to Spingomonas biofilms. This binding can not necessarily be used to identify specific target sugars in EPS.

Use of fluorophore-conjugated lectins to study cell-cell interactions in model marine biofilms

Article Abstract:

The duatoms that synthesized several extracellular polymers, which can be differentiated after lectin staining and the significant interactions between diatoms and bacteria in mixed-species biofilms are reported. The active principle of the spent medium is probably a lectin or agglutinin that is able to blind to the extracellular plolymers of the diatoms involved in adhesion and motility.

High rates of conjugation in bacterial biofilms as determined by quantitative in situ analysis

Article Abstract:

The conjugation rate among bacteria in a biofilm may be 1,000 times greater than among bacteria in a liquid culture. This was the conclusion of researchers who used automated confocal laser scanning microscopy to analyze conjugation in bacterial biofilms.
