Evaluation of methods for storage of marine macroorganisms with optimal recovery of bacteria

Article Abstract:

Different methods for storage of macroorganismic material on board ships or at remote locations were tested and how each performed with respect to survival and recoverable diversity of bacteria were evaluated. It is concluded that SD and SGT methods for storage of macroorganismic material result in equal or higher survival of total bacteria and allow recovery of a higher diversity of bacteria than the other three methods tested.

Bacterial diversity associated with Blood falls, a subglacial outflow from the Taylor glacier, Antarctica

Article Abstract:

Bacterial diversity in Blood Falls, the surface manifestation of brine released from below Taylor Glacier, Antarctica was studied. The results suggested that the brine below the Taylor Glacier hosts a viable ecosystem with microorganisms capable of growth, surrounded by chemical energy present in reduced iron and sulfur compounds.

Phylogenetic diversity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase large-subunit genes from deep-sea microorganisms

Article Abstract:

Thiobacillus-related ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO) appears to be globally distributed in the deep ocean. This was the conclusion of researchers who analyzed RuBisCO genes of deep-sea microorganisms in samples taken from hydrothermal vents, tubeworms, and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
